The Penicuik Arts Festival 2009 builds on the home-grown success of the first two festivals and the Penicuik Arts Trail we started three years ago.  It brings together a fortnight of arts events organised by the volunteers of two local arts charities, Penicuik Community Development Trust and Penicuik Community Arts Association, plus a handful of individual artists and performers, the Penicuik House Project and other local organisations, with the help of the Community Council and space and support from local shops and restaurants. It’s timed to chime with the nearby Edinburgh and Peebles festivals.  You’ll find a mixed program of exhibitions and workshops and events for all ages, and a strong Africa theme this year.  Contact 01968 672706 or 677854.   Although the Penicuik Arts Festival is a concentrated celebration it is part of a continuous flow of exhibitions, events and films arranged by community volunteers right through this homecoming year - explore the start of our year-long programme here.

 The Drum at Penicuik Library: Drawings from Nature (Sandra Vick book project with Cornbank P7 pupils); Children’s images of Africa, plus shop-window exhibitions in Pen-y-Coe Press, Flowers by Lindsey, Headcases and Optical Express, and children’s murals in the John Street precinct.

The Arts Trail is extended with more special exhibitions in the town centre and elsewhere

Apart from the Spital and Amazondean workshops, all the trail venues are within a short walk in the town centre. The Spital stonework studio is on the slopes of the Pentlands, at Spital, NineMile Burn, 5km south along A766 then A702, then on the right. Amazondean studio is a little further along A702, on the left approaching Carlops.

PEN-Y-COE PRESS in West Street, FLOWERS BY LINDSEY in High Street and HEADCASES and OPTICAL EXPRESS in the town centre precinct, John Street. All show part of the Art Centre’s annual exhibition.

CRAFT SHOP

Over 20 talented craft­ workers and artists have a co-operative craft shop in Penicuik Arts Centre, open throughout the Festival.

 

10am-4pm daily during the Festival, and when the Centre is hosting a festival event. Have a snack in the Gallery cafe downstairs.

GALLERY CAFÉ

The Gallery Cafe is the heart of the Arts Centre at 4 West Street.  On Monday to Saturday from 10 till 4, and at festival time on Sundays, it’s run by a handful of our members and known for friendly atmosphere and tasty food: home-made-soups, cakes and biscuits. Beyond the cafe is the sheltered sun garden for eating out on warmer days.  With a good cup of coffee, you can enjoy the gallery all around you. Two exhibitions are featured herein the café during the Festival.  And upstairs throughout the Festival is Penicuik’s Annual Exhibition.

UPSTAIRS EVENTS at Penicuik Arts

The upstairs gallery is the main venue for Penicuik Community ArtsAssociation’s big annual exhibition and Turner Prize for the duration of the Festival. a great intimate space for exhibitions and events.  For years local and international performers have enjoyed the close-up rapport with the audience here.  They keep coming back for more!
