The
solidity of ancient buildings and the patina of old stone – the play of light

These influences are the starting point for Val’s large handbuilt pieces finished in natural slips and
microcrystalline glaze. Val’s work is
entirely contemporary and practical, despite being made in historic Culross in

I have
lived on Skye for 10 years and love the colours and
forms of the land and its climate. My
work is concerned with how we live within the landscape. The pots I make, how
they stand on a surface, the space they occupy, help me to make sense of my own
place in the world. I try to develop work that is expressive of my life and myself. The pots are
made by coiling and press moulding. Scraping reveals
textures in the clay, which I develop with applications of slip. This year I
have been experimenting with oxidation firings which allows
me to bring a wider palette of colour into the work.
I use an iron oxide collected from the algal bloom of a local spring which
gives the work a physical connection to the landscape. I use an oildrum
kiln to raku fire with post firing reduction in mixtures of sawdust seaweed and
peat.

media artist-maker, Kirsty O’Connor currently works in clay and paper –making
voluptuous pots and unique books. These are very different disciplines but she
approaches them in a similar way allowing the materials to dictate her
direction. The areas she is exploring include:
the great mother; female sexuality; what we are doing to the earth; altered
states and the artist as shaman. Her
smoke-fired figurative vessels are created in honour
of the great goddess and her myriad aspects as celebrated in different
cultures.

Work is
white porcelain some with Oxides, some with printed paper. I am influenced by place and time and often
use textures from nature and man made objects found at a specific place on a
visit with my porcelain clay, boards and a rolling pin. I like the immediacy of the process and being
out “on site” is one of the pleasures of this way of working. I try to look at the textures of everything –
cliffs, flowers and leaves but also cigarette butts and flattened tin cans if
that is what I see! They all form the texture and experience of that place and
time!

Daniel chooses to build his ceramic vessels in earthenware clay using
traditional throwing, coiling and hand building techniques, firing to
temperatures of 1100°C, and creating finishes that illuminate the richness and
shine of metallic materials. He achieves such
effects through experimentation with lustres, at
times applying several layers to one piece.
